Commonly Asked Questions:

Q: Does Acupuncture hurt?
A:
Most people are pleasantly surprised to find that Acupuncture does not hurt.  In fact they find it to be a deeply centering and relaxing experience.  The sensations in the area being needled can range from nothing at all to a slight pinch, followed by a warming and heavy feeling in the area.  Most sensations are fleeting and the overall feeling is one of relaxation and well being.

Q: Does Acupuncture have side effects?
A:
One of the great benefits of Acupuncture is that negative side effects are extremely rare.  Acupuncture is safely used in conjunction with conventional treatments - allopathic medication, psychotherapy, physiotherapy, chemotherapy, radiation, etc.  In fact it is used effectively to alleviate the side-effects of conventional treatments.

Q: Are Acupuncture needles safe?
A:
Yes, Acupuncture needles are very safe.  We only use sterile needles that are disposed after each use.

Q: What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
A:
Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture are part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the world's oldest continually practiced form of medicine.  Herbs when used in conjunction with Acupuncture produce an effective regulatory effect on the body that is much gentler than pharmaceuticals.  The herbal prescription is designed to address the specific patterns of each individual, making Chinese herbal formulations a safe and effective choice.

Q: What should I expect from my first Acupuncture session?
A:
The initial Acupuncture consultation takes approximately 1.5 hours and includes a detailed assessment and TCM diagnosis (tongue and pulse readings and symptom intake to determine patterns of disharmony in the body).  Based on this evaluation, the acupuncturist creates your treatment plan and you receive a full acupuncture treatment.  In addition to acupuncture, you may be prescribed an herbal formula and given nutritional or lifestyle recommendations.

Q: What should I expect from my follow-up visits? How many will I need?
A:
Follow-up Acupuncture visits take 1 hour and include a brief follow-up on your progress.  Each treatment is customized to meet your continually changing health patterns as you progress through your treatment plan.  The number of visits depends on the nature of your health concern, primarily whether the symptoms are acute or chronic.  Some treatments plans recommend 2 treatments per week while others recommend 1 treatment every 2-3 weeks.  During you initial visit, the acupuncturist will explain your treatment plan to you.
